Calibr at Scripps Research
Anil Gupta has a diverse work experience in the field of medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis. Anil started their career at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, where they worked as a graduate student researcher. Anil also held various leadership roles within the student council. After completing their master's degree, they joined Indiana University Bloomington as a graduate student researcher and teaching assistant. Gupta then pursued their doctoral studies at Michigan State University, where they conducted research in asymmetric catalysis and mechanistic studies. Anil also served as a graduate teaching assistant during this time. Following their PhD, Gupta joined Cornell University as a postdoctoral associate, focusing on the total synthesis of natural products. Anil then worked at Michigan State University as a visiting adjunct scholar, conducting theoretical investigations of acid-catalyzed reactions. Gupta later joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a postdoctoral research associate, where they achieved significant accomplishments in transition metal catalysis. In 2018, they joined The Scripps Research Institute, where they held roles as an investigator, principal investigator, and associate director in medicinal chemistry and organic synthesis. Anil also worked at Calibr at Scripps Research as the director of medicinal chemistry. Gupta has contributed to research articles and publications throughout their career.
Anil Gupta has a diverse educational background in the field of Chemistry and Physics. Anil completed their Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics from Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University, where they studied from 1998 to 2001. Anil further pursued their studies and earned a Master of Science (MS) degree in Organic Chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee between 2002 and 2004. Building upon their knowledge and expertise, they went on to obtain a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from Michigan State University, where they studied from 2006 to 2012.
In addition to their formal education, Anil Gupta has also obtained a certification in "Introduction to Molecular Modeling in Drug Discovery" from Schrödinger in December 2020.

The California Institute for Biomedical Research (Calibr) is a first-of-its-kind, nonprofit translational research institute dedicated to accelerating the next generation of medicines. Affiliated with Scripps Research—among the most innovative institutes worldwide—we spearhead drug discovery from a steady flow of pioneering science. Our self-sustaining model encourages broad and bold exploration with far-reaching goals, yet rapid transition of our most successful, high-impact programs into the clinic. We pursue audacious and imaginative ideas—bridging scientific and technological advances to develop new medicines for unmet medical needs. Our pipeline programs range from cancer to infectious diseases and from discovery to early clinical trial stages, all aimed at preventing disease and healing humans around the world. We bring together leaders in research, drug development, and business to answer important biological questions and develop new interventions to treat, cure, and prevent disease. Our infrastructure and expertise extend from high-throughput screening and protein engineering to pharmacology and clinical development. Calibr’s research space includes a newly renovated 35,000 square foot facility in La Jolla, CA, which houses over 100 interdisciplinary scientists and staff with state-of-the-art instrumentation. This infrastructure, combined with Calibr’s drug discovery expertise, enables projects rooted in novel therapeutic mechanisms to progress from the laboratory through preclinical development and ultimately to the clinic through commercial, federal, or foundation partnerships.
