Ilya Espino de Marotta

Chief Sustainability Officer at Canal de Panamá

Ilya Espino de Marotta has an extensive work experience in the Panama Canal. Ilya started their career in 1985 as a Marine Engineer with the Panama Canal Commission and then served as a General Engineer with the Panama Canal Authority from 1989 to 1991. Ilya then worked as a Mechanical Engineer and Valuation Engineer in the Engineering Division of the Panama Canal Commission from 1991 to 1998.

In 1998, Ilya joined the Panama Canal Commission/Panama Canal Authority as a Multidisciplinary Engineer and served as the Capital Investment Coordinator until 2002. Ilya then moved to the Canal de Panamá and worked as an Engineer in the Master Plan Coordinating Team from 2002 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007, they worked as a Multidisciplinary Engineer in the Office of Program Development.

Ilya returned to the Canal de Panamá in 2007 and held the position of Executive Manager Resources Management and Project Controls until 2012. From 2012 to 2019, they served as the Executive Vice President Engineering and Program Management, overseeing all engineering aspects of the Panama Canal operations and maintenance.

From 2019 to 2023, Ilya worked as the Vice President for Transit Business (COO) in the Canal de Panamá, responsible for the safe transit of vessels through the Panama Canal and various other operations. Ilya then served as the Deputy Administrator from 2020 until their current role as the Chief Sustainability Officer, starting in 2024.

Ilya Espino de Marotta completed a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Marine Engineering from Texas A&M University Galveston Campus from 1982 to 1985. Ilya pursued a Master's degree in Engineering Economics from Universidad Santa Maria la Antigua from 1994 to 1996. Additionally, they participated in an Executive Development Program at Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management in 2006. Ilya also attended Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1982, although no degree or field of study information is provided. Currently, they are enrolled in the International Program Innovation Experience Israel 360, which will take place from 2022 to 2024.
