Simon Hughes has a diverse work experience in the engineering field. Simon started their career as a Site Engineer at Somerset County Council from September 1994 to September 1996. Simon then worked as a Bridge Engineer at Atkins from September 1996 to May 1999. Simon then joined British Waterways as a Construction Project Manager from May 1999 to July 2012, where they managed various canal infrastructure repairs and restoration projects. Simon later joined Canal & River Trust, where they held the positions of Project Team Manager from July 2012 to November 2017, and Principal Engineer - Design and Development from November 2017 to present. In these roles, they managed teams of engineers and project managers, oversaw design solutions, contract management, and handled cost estimation for grants. Throughout their career, Simon has gained extensive experience in civil engineering, project management, and canal infrastructure repairs, among other areas.

Simon Hughes attended the University of Nottingham from 1991 to 1994, where they obtained a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Civil Engineering. In terms of additional certifications, they became a Chartered Engineer CEng MICE from the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in December 2004. Simon also obtained the NEC ECC Project Manager certification from ICE in July 2017, the Project Management Qualification from the Association for Project Management in July 2018, the Temporary Works Coordinator certification from CITB in February 2019, and the Principal Designer certification from the Association for Project Safety in March 2021.
