Tom Sellevaag

Upper Grades Head at Capitol Hill Day School

Tom Sellevaag has a diverse work experience in the education sector. Tom started their career in 1998 as a Teacher at Carderock Springs Elementary School, where they taught math curriculum to students in grade-level and accelerated classes. During their time there, they also served as a member of the School Improvement Team and as a Team Leader, fostering communication and addressing instructional techniques.

In 2005, Tom founded and owned Extra Credit Academic Support and Enrichment, where they personally provided individual tutoring to students in various subjects, including math, reading, and writing. Tom also designed and conducted summer workshops linked to school curriculum.

Tom then joined Capitol Hill Day School in 2007, initially as a Math Teacher and Program Coordinator. Tom taught math in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, developed self-paced learning models, and led math-related professional development for a team of educators. Tom later became the Upper Grades Coordinator, overseeing day-to-day operations, supporting faculty growth, and leading the school's three-year accreditation renewal process. In 2018, they were promoted to the position of Upper Grades Head, where they led the development and growth of the Upper Grades program, aligning it with the school's mission and vision.

Throughout their career, Tom has demonstrated expertise in teaching, program coordination, professional development, and educational leadership.

Tom Sellevaag received their Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from American University in 1998. Tom further pursued their education and obtained a Master of Education degree in Teacher Leadership from the University of Maryland, completing their studies in 2004.
