Owen Lacava

Owen LaCava is a technology entrepreneur and machine learning engineer with a strong background in software development and data analytics. Currently serving as the Founder of Substrate (YC S24) since June 2023, Owen previously held the position of Machine Learning Engineer at Cover Whale from January 2022 to May 2023, where responsibilities included building a telematics analytics platform and managing partnerships with hardware vendors. As a Co-Founder of Backprop from October 2019 to December 2021, Owen developed a large language model inference deployment platform and a fine-tuning library, while also overseeing deep learning servers for GPU rental. Additionally, Owen gained experience as a Software Development Intern at Intelligent Medical Objects in the summer of 2019. Owen holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of St Andrews, completed in 2020.
