Liam O'Brien

Full Professor

Liam O'Brien is a Full Professor and Associate Professor at Carleton University since July 2011, specializing in Indoor Air Quality and Green Building Design for architecture and engineering students. O'Brien's research encompasses several areas, including developing design tools for building energy performance, studying occupant behavior related to window shade adjustments, measuring green roof performance, and creating a life-cycle costing methodology for net-zero energy buildings. In addition to academic pursuits, O'Brien has worked as a Building Energy Modeller since September 2008, consulting on various projects such as energy modeling for the Mining Engineering Building at the University of Toronto and optimizing shade control algorithms at Concordia University. O'Brien's past experience also includes a research position at CanmetENERGY, where demand response modelling was conducted for energy cost savings in high-rise office towers. O'Brien holds a PhD in Building Engineering from Concordia University, an MASc in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Toronto, and a Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering from Ryerson University.
