Communities make decisions on incomplete information and contested trust. Carolina Commons is building shared infrastructure to change that: a way for towns and neighborhoods to see their own situation clearly, decide together, and govern the tools they use to do it.

We start from a set of working principles, written with our Founding Circle and revised in the open.

Data carries values. Counting something is already a judgment about what matters, so we surface what we measured, why, and what we set aside. We treat data as a map: useful, directional, never mistaken for the territory itself. We use that foundation for foresight, surfacing what's already true and where it's heading, with predictions kept transparent and always in service of human judgment rather than ahead of it.

That last point extends to how we use AI. It's a tool for seeing further and weighing more, not a substitute for people making the decision. The measure of a good tool, in our view, is that it leaves a community more capable and needing it less.
We gather by proximity: closeness to the need, lived experience, and the dissent that's usually left out of the room, rather than by demographic checkbox. And we exist to tend relationships, to each other, to place, to the living environment, with problem-solving as the fruit of that tending, not a substitute for it.

We're currently piloting our first projects, building witnessable artifacts before we ask anyone to take our word for it. The infrastructure itself is built to be shared, transparent, and forkable, designed from the start to pass from a founding circle into community governance as it matures.
