Karen Callahan

Information Scientist at CAS

Karen Callahan has extensive experience in scientific research and academia. Karen currently works as an Information Scientist at CAS since July 2022. Previously, they were a Research Scientist at the University at Buffalo from April 2021 to March 2022. Before that, they served as a Postdoctoral Associate at the University at Buffalo from September 2019 to September 2020.

Karen's research experience includes working as a Research Assistant at Université de Montréal from July 2014 to August 2018, where they designed a novel model for understanding the effect of membrane thickness on the potassium channel KcsA, proposed a secondary gating mechanism for ion channels regulated by pH and voltage, and conducted experiments on the origin of hyperpolarization-activation.

Prior to that, they worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Chicago from August 2010 to June 2014. During this time, they made significant discoveries on the regulation of ion conduction and selectivity in voltage-gated ion channels, discovered new orthogonal degrees of ion conduction freedom, and contributed to the development of polarizable force field parameters.

Karen's academic journey began as a Graduate student at the University of California, Irvine in August 2004. Karen obtained their graduate degree in August 2010, specializing in an unspecified field. Throughout their studies, they actively participated in research activities.

Overall, Karen Callahan's work experience showcases their expertise in scientific research and their contributions to the field of ion channels and membrane biology.

Karen Callahan earned a High School Diploma with Honors from Springboro High School from 1996 to 2000. Karen then pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from The Ohio State University between 2000 and 2004. Following their undergraduate studies, they attended UC Irvine from 2004 to 2010, where they obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Chemistry.

In addition to their formal education, Karen has also obtained several certifications. In January 2019, they acquired a 1 Year Short Term Substitute General Education License from the Ohio Department of Education. In October 2012, they completed the Introduction to Sustainability course from Coursera. More recently, in November 2020, Karen obtained the Scrum Foundation Professional Certificate from CertiProf.
