In 1996 they moved to Argonne National Laboratory as a Post-doctoral Fellow in the Chemistry and Materials Science Division, where they accomplished the synthesis of new tetrathiafulvalene based electron donor compounds and coordinated with an internal team in the electrocrystallization of organometallic charge transfer salts. James then moved to California Molecular Electronics Corp. (CALMEC) in 1999 as a Senior Research Scientist, where they led research and development of organic molecular switches for data storage applications, and managed an NSF-funded project on Chiroptical switches for nanotechnology applications. In 2003, they moved to The Polymer Technology Group, where they were a Senior Research Scientist II and demonstrated the synthesis and development of a innovative single MW photocurable silicone oligomer for contact lens applications. In 2008, they moved to DSM Biomedical, where they held three roles: Senior Product Concept Manager, R&D Manager, Ophthalmic Biomaterials, and Senior Staff Scientist. In 2016, they moved to Moly Laboratories as Chief Consultant, where they provided inputs to business strategy and proposals in support of the company's directions and engaged with potential clients.
