Mike Buttry

Mike Buttry has a diverse work experience spanning over two decades. Mike is currently serving as the Managing Director at Cherry Tree & Associates, where they focus on providing investment banking services to middle-market owner-operated and professionally managed companies, with a specific emphasis on the education and training sectors. Prior to this role, they worked as an Entrepreneur In Residence at Whiteboard Advisors.

Notably, Mike spent a significant portion of their career at Capella Education Company, where they held various roles, including Vice President of Public Affairs and Strategy. During their tenure, they played a crucial role in the successful merger between Capella Education Company and Strayer Education, Inc. Mike also developed effective public relations and government affairs plans for the newly combined company. In addition, they led the creation of Capella's Public Affairs function, overseeing government affairs, public relations, internal communications, and external relations. Mike's efforts resulted in Capella University receiving approval for innovative direct assessment programs.

Before joining Capella, Mike worked as the Managing Director at Chlopak, Leonard Schechter, overseeing communications campaigns for notable clients, including Google, the Government of Kenya, and the American Dental Association. Mike successfully secured media placements and led the creation of a multi-state, multi-stakeholder advocacy team.

Earlier in their career, Mike served as Chief of Staff for Senator Chuck Hagel, leading a staff of 50 and serving as the senator's spokesperson. Mike also held the position of Communications Director for Senator Hagel, where they engaged with Capitol Hill reporters daily and handled various written communications for the senator.

Prior to their time in politics, Mike gained grassroots campaign experience as a Grassroots Field Organizer for Norm Coleman for Senate in 2002. Additionally, they worked as the Press Secretary and Press Assistant for Chuck Hagel for Senate, where they managed media relations and supported the Communications Director.

Mike Buttry earned their Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Government from Creighton University, where they attended from 1996 to 2000. Additionally, in 2014, they completed the Executive Education Program, Strategic Marketing Essentials at The Wharton School.
