Editorial Director at Child Trends

Brent Franklin has had a diverse range of work experiences throughout their career. Brent began their professional journey as a Legislative Intern at the District Office of US Representative John "Randy" Kuhl in 2006. Brent then transitioned to a role as an Admissions Counselor at Alfred University, where they successfully increased regional enrollment through innovative recruitment techniques.

In 2009, Brent became a Research Assistant at the American University Justice Programs Office, where they conducted research and co-authored a publication on drug treatment courts. Brent also coordinated a research project and presented findings at a drugs summit in Spain.

From 2011 to 2012, Brent worked as a New Business/Legislative Fellow at Russ Reid, providing marketing and government relations support to nonprofit clients. Brent contributed to the successful pursuit of new clients and facilitated policy advancements for coalition organizations.

Brent then joined The Brookings Institution in 2013 as a Communications Assistant/Aide and Staff Writer. Brent drafted blogs and op-eds, provided editing support for scholarly work, and handled media relations.

In 2014, Brent took on a role as a Freelance Editor at The Brookings Institution before moving to Palladium: Make It Possible as a Writer/Editor for the Health Policy Plus project. Brent contributed to a high-performing communications and publications team and worked on various publications related to health policy.

Most recently, Brent has been working at Child Trends as an Editorial Director since September 2018. Prior to that, they held the role of Editor from August 2017. In this position, they have led the editorial direction and has been involved in various editing and writing tasks.

Throughout their career, Brent has showcased their skills in writing, editing, research, and project coordination across a variety of industries and organizations.

Brent Franklin completed their Bachelor of Arts degree in Government, with a focus on history, arts, and humanities, at Hamilton College from 2003 to 2007. Later on, from 2009 to 2011, they pursued a Master of Public Policy at the School of Public Affairs in American University, specializing in Environmental and Energy Policy.
