The Rt. Rev. Clifton Daniel III is the tenth Dean of the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine. He previously served as its Acting/Interim Dean. Before his retirement in August 2016, he served as Bishop Provisional of the Diocese of Pennsylvania and was Bishop of the Diocese of East Carolina for 17 years.
He currently chairs the Board of The General Theological Seminary, New York. He also serves on the Presiding Bishop’s Pastoral Development Committee. He is serving his second term on The Church Pension Fund Board of Trustees.
He has served as Chair of the Presiding Bishop’s Council of Advice; President of the Court of Review for the Trial of a Bishop; the Standing Commission on the Structure of the Church; Chair, the Board of Church Deployment; Vice President of Province IV; Board of the University of the South, Sewanee; and President of the Bishops of Province IV.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and from Virginia Theological Seminary. He has received DDiv degrees from Virginia Seminary and the University of the South. He has also studied at the College of Preachers in Washington D.C., the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California, St. Petersburg Theological Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia, and St. George’s College, Jerusalem.
