Leonel Alegre has a diverse work experience in various fields. Leonel began their career in 2000 as a Physics and Chemistry Intern Teacher at Escola EB 2,3/S de Cunha Rivara de Arraiolos. Leonel then became a Physics and Chemistry Teacher at Escola EB 2,3 de Santiago Maior de Beja in 2002. In 2004, they hosted a science TV show called Megaciência on SIC. In 2008, they worked as a Postdoctoral research fellow at REQUIMTE- Department of Chemistry and also hosted a science TV contest called Ideias que Mudam o Mundo on RTP. Leonel joined RTP as a host of the science TV show "ABCiencia" in 2008 and hosted it until September of the same year. Leonel worked as a host of the TV show "Pavilhão sob Investigação" on SIC in 2011. In 2012, they became a member of the Annual Conference Programme Committee for Ecsite, the European network of science centres and museums. Lastly, they worked at Ciência Viva as the Head of Education, Science and Culture Unit of Pavilion of Knowledge and later as a Project Manager on the Education Team.

Leonel Alegre completed their Licenciatura em Ensino de Física e Química from Universidade de Évora between 1996 and 2001. Following that, from 2001 to 2007, they pursued their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Organometallic Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico.
