Dr. Elkind is one of City Labs’ top advisors. Until recently he served as the Senior Scientist and Radiation Safety Officer for City Labs, Inc., providing support over a broad range of areas including research and development, materials science/characterization, laboratory facilities and processing, regulatory guidance, radiation safety, and quality control. Prior to joining City Labs, Dr. Elkind served as Chief Scientist and Radiation Safety Officer for The Protective Group—an armor manufacturer for the U.S. Army.
Dr. Elkind’s diverse technical background includes Nondestructive Evaluation [UT, XRD, optical, radiography], Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy, mechanical testing, microstructural analysis, failure analysis, and ballistic testing. His career history spans commercial, government, academic, and start-up endeavors including armor design and manufacturing, Anti-Submarine Warfare systems analysis, structural engineering, construction materials testing, oceanographic sciences, and medical devices.
Dr. Elkind earned his BES, MSE, and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where he was also a Post-Doctoral Research Associate and member of the Alpha Sigma Mu Materials Science Honors Society.
