In 1994, Matustik became the Deputy Director of Communications and Public Information at the City of Austin, Texas, a role they continue to hold.

David Matustik attended Reicher High School from 1969 to 1973. Later, they pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Journalism with a focus on the News Editorial sequence at the University of North Texas from 1973 to 1977.
