Karla Mendez has a diverse background in community engagement, policy advising, and arts administration, primarily within municipal environments. Currently serving as a Community Engagement Specialist at the City of Chula Vista since February 2017, Karla has held various roles including Policy Aide and Office of Sustainability Associate, focusing on conservation, environmental services, and smart city initiatives. Previous experience includes serving as a Council Representative for the City of San Diego, Marketing Director at The B Factor, and Senior Council Aid/Policy Advisor for Councilwoman Pamela Bensoussan. Karla has also contributed as an Intern for Mayor Mary Casillas Salas and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science and Government, General Humanities, and French from San Diego State University. The early educational background includes graduating from Otay Ranch High School.

The City of Chula Vista is located at the center of one of the richest cultural, economic and environmentally diverse zones in the United States. Construction on the 535-acre Chula Vista Bayfront project is underway. It will feature a world-class waterfront resort, a convention center, parks, and residential housing. A new luxury RV Resort opened in 2021 on the bayfront with RV sites and vacation rentals. Plans are moving forward on the 375-acre University Park and Innovation District in the eastern section which will bring more education, jobs and businesses to the City.
