Bruce then pursued a medical career and earned both their MD and MPH degrees from Northwestern University, where they studied from 1980 to 1985. Later on, Bruce participated in the Kellogg Foundation National Leadership Fellowship program between 1988 and 1991, focusing on Organizational Leadership. Bruce also completed a Clincial Scholars Fellowship at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, specializing in Health/Health Care Administration/Management. Additionally, they undertook a Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. In 2017 and 2018, Bruce completed the CDC Preventive Medicine Fellowship, a non-degree program specializing in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency.
