Councilman Derrick Thompson was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a 1979 graduate at West Philadelphia High School. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Michigan State University. Having completed my academics in the private sector, his next endeavor was joining the Army in 1983. After serving 21 years of honorable and faithful service in the Quartermaster Field, he retired in 2004, from Fort Sill Oklahoma.
The next chapter in his life started in late 2003 with the relocation of his family to Fayetteville, North Carolina. Once settled into Fayetteville, he continued his public service to the community for an additional 15 years of employment serving parts of the communities in District 6 as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service (USPS).
