John Phelps

Division Chief of Fire Training at City of Lawrence

John Phelps began his journey in the Fire Service in 1997 as a cadet at a Volunteer Fire Department in Morgan County, Indiana. Phelps began working part-time at the Mooresville Fire Department and Madison Township Fire Department, while applying and working toward becoming a career firefighter. He held many positions at these departments including lieutenant and training officer. In 2005 Phelps began his career at the Lawrence Township Fire Department and in 2010 became a member of the City of Lawrence Fire Department, where he was promoted to Division Chief of Training in 2019.

Phelps has been part of the Training Division for his most of his time with LFD. He was previously assigned to Engine 37 and has served as the Shift Training Officer on B-Shift for the last year. His new duties will include fire and special operations training programs for the fire department, as well as maintaining the SCBA program and overseeing the training facility.

Phelps holds many certifications including Fire Officer I, II, III, Safety Officer, Instructor II/III, Rope Rescue Technician, and Swift Water Technician.
