Sean Maher

Citywide Communications & Engagement Director at City of Oakland

Sean Maher has a diverse work experience spanning several organizations and roles. Sean began their career as a Staff Writer at Oakland Tribune and Bay Area News Group from 2008 to 2012. During this time, they also worked as a Volunteer Reentry Counselor at the California Reentry Program at San Quentin State Prison in 2008 and 2009.

In 2012, Sean joined the City of Oakland, where they held various positions. Sean served as the Communications Director in the Mayor's Office from September 2012 to December 2014. Sean then became the Zero Waste Outreach Program Manager from January 2015 to September 2023. Simultaneously, they worked as a Public Information Officer from January 2017 to September 2023. Since June 2023, Sean has been the Citywide Communications & Engagement Director for the City of Oakland.

Furthermore, in 2005, Sean worked as a Bartender at The City Club of San Francisco.

Sean Maher attended San Francisco State University from 1999 to 2008. Sean did not complete a degree during this time. At some point, they studied Journalism at the same university, although the exact duration is unknown.
