Denise's career began with an Administrative Assistant position at the City of Redwood City from January 1996 to January 1998 and included a role as a Substitute Teacher for the San Carlos, Belmont, and Cupertino School Districts in early 1995. Educational credentials include a Bachelor's degree in English with a concentration in English language from California State University - East Bay, Teaching Credentials in English Language and Literature from Notre Dame de Namur University, and an Associate of Arts degree from Cañada College.
