W.Michael Smith has a diverse work experience spanning over several decades. W.Michael started their career in 1980 as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, where they served as a Project Manager and Construction Supervisor for a rural electrification project. From 1984 to 1985, they worked as an Instrument Person at Sunde Land Surveying. In 1986, they joined Sigma Surveying Services as a Crew Chief and Drafts person.

In 1992, Smith joined Bolton & Menk, where they held the position of Senior Survey Crew Chief & Wetland Specialist. During their time there, they supervised survey crews, established survey control networks, and gathered field data. W.Michael worked on notable projects such as the STH 96 FY2000 Reconstruction Project and the STH 5/CSAH 32 FY2003 Reconstruction Project.

Smith then worked for Walsh Construction as a Survey Technician from 2011 to 2013. W.Michael served as the on-site Project Surveyor and was responsible for supervising construction layout survey crews and preparing as-built survey drawings for the Light Rail Rapid Transit corridor project in St. Paul, MN.

In 2014, Smith joined The Walsh Group - Walsh Construction & Archer Western as a Surveyor. W.Michael worked on the Zoo Interchange project, focusing on the construction layout of steel UPRR Bridges, Highway 100 Bridges, and a highway on-ramp Flyover bridge.

Most recently, Smith has been working at Civil Site Group, PC since 2017 as a Survey Crew Chief. Further details about their roles and responsibilities at this company are not provided.

W. Michael Smith has a diverse education history. W.Michael started their academic journey by attending Lake Superior College, where they pursued a degree in Civil Engineering Technology. W.Michael completed their studies in 1978 and obtained an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Civil Engineering Technology.

Afterwards, W. Michael Smith enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, where they focused on Pre-engineering for the academic year 1977-1978. W.Michael then continued their education at Normandale Community College from 1985 to 1988, where they studied Pre-Engineering once again.

In 1988, Smith attended Inver Hills Community College with a focus on Land Surveying. W.Michael completed their studies in 1989, although no degree was specified.

Later on, in the period from 2004 to 2009, W. Michael Smith pursued the Wetland Delineator Certification Program at the University of Minnesota-St. Paul. Although no degree was specified for this program, it provided him with valuable knowledge in the field.

Outside of their formal education, Smith obtained the Certified Surveyor Technician III certification from the National Society of Professional Surveyors in March 2007. This certification added to their expertise in the surveying field.
