James Barrett has a diverse work experience that spans several industries. James started their career as a Paralegal in the US Army Reserve in 1992 and continued in this role until 1998. Following this, they served as a Paralegal in the US Army from 1998 to 2001, during which they also took on the role of an Assistant Senior Manager for Army Recruitment. From 2001 to 2009, James held the position of an Assistant Senior Manager in the Army Recruiting Office, where they recruited and processed qualified applicants for enlistment. James then took on the role of Senior Manager (Health Care Recruiter) from 2009 to 2012. In 2012, they became an Assistant Senior Manager (Career Counselor) until 2014. James later served as a Senior Manager/Assistant Senior Manager (Officer Accessions Career Counselor) from 2014 to 2017 in the US Army. In 2017, alongside their military career, James worked at the U.S. Small Business Administration as a Disaster Recovery Specialist and then joined Clarence Central Schools as a School Bus Driver. James was subsequently promoted to the position of Head Bus Driver.

James Barrett has a diverse education history. James obtained a Master of Science (MS) degree in Performance Improvement from the University of Arkansas Grantham in 2015. Prior to that, they earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia College in 2010. James also holds an Associate of Science (AS) degree in Criminal Justice from Onondaga Community College, which they completed in 2005. In addition to their formal education, James has obtained several certifications. These include being certified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic) by the New York State Department of Health, Bureau of Emergency Medical Services in January 2020. James also holds certifications in Article 19-A Certified Examiner (obtained in June 2021), Commercial Driver License-Class B, Passenger and Air Brakes Endorsements (obtained in October 2020), Prehospital Trauma Life Support (obtained in September 2019), Fire Police Officer (obtained in October 2017), Notary Public (obtained in July 2017), and Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) (obtained in October 2019). Additionally, James is a candidate for the School Bus Driver Instructor (SBDI) certification through the New York State Education Department. In 2016, they also briefly attended Erie Community College, although the degree obtained during that time is not specified.
