James Stevick

Senior Hardware Engineer at Clarity Movement

James Stevick is currently a Senior Hardware Engineer at Clarity Movement. Prior to that, they were with Clarity Movement Co. for 5 years and 6 months, where they held positions as Senior Hardware Engineer and Hardware R&D and Test Engineer. In their role at Clarity Movement, James was responsible for designing experiments and testing setups for data-driven development of product hardware and sensors, which included validating functionality, improving data accuracy, and debugging issues and providing solutions. James also managed manufacturing builds and worked with the factory to implement efficient and automated systems for build processes. Additionally, James developed and managed software and hardware of Clarity’s R&D tools, researched and developed the Clarity Node – wireless, weatherproof, multi-sensor air-quality monitor, and led experimental design, manufacturing, and procedure of life-time analysis on sensor. Furthermore, they prototyped next generation sensor and performed tests for proof of concept, component selection, and design optimization. Lastly, James was responsible for data collection, analysis, and visualization (Python) for weekly presentation to clients.

Before working at Clarity Movement Co., James held the title of Mechanical and Electrical Design at Kasper Space Labs in support of NASA's mission to Jovian moon Europa. In this role, they developed instrumentation and analysis for sensors that measure charged particles to determine the depth and salinity of the moon’s oceans. Additionally, James designed a real-time imaging system to calibrate high flux particle accelerators used in testing Europa instruments. James'selectrical design experience includes circuit design and simulation on TINA-TI SPICE-based Simulation Program, as well as design, soldering, and testing PCB using Altium Designer. For mechanical design, James used SOLIDWORKS to design, CAD, and manufacture detector housing, suppressor grid, and support structure. James was with Kasper Space Labs for 1 year.

Prior to their work in mechanical and electrical design, James was a Mathematics & Physics Tutor at Claremont McKenna College for 2 years and 10 months. James also completed a 3-month research project in image segmentation and pattern detection at UCLA Mathematics Department. Other previous work experience includes internships in real estate finance at RMZ Corp (2 months) and managerial office assistance at Walnut Property Management and Real Estate (3 months).

James Stevick has a Master of Science from the University of Michigan - Rackham Graduate School in Mechanical Engineering from 2015-2016. James also went to Claremont McKenna College for Economics & Physics from 2011-2015 and was a part of the Varsity Diving, Gymnastics PE Coach, and the Berkeley High School from 2006-2010 where they were the President of Engineering Club, Barbeque Club, and Golden Bear Gymnastics.
