Matthew Runnalls graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with honors in Political Science and Economics in 2006. Matthew then pursued their medical education at McMaster University from 2011 to 2014, where they obtained a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree specializing in Medicine.

In terms of additional certifications, Matthew obtained a Certification in Emergency Medicine from The College of Family Physicians of Canada in September 2020. In June 2016, they received the Board of Certification in Family Medicine from the same institution. Matthew also holds certifications in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Experienced Provider (ACLS) from the American Heart Association, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the same institution, and is an Advanced Trauma Life Support Instructor certified by the American College of Surgeons.
