Eckard Wimmer

Dr. Eckard Wimmer is a member of the National Academy of Science and Distinguished Professor of Microbiology at Stony Brook University. Dr. Wimmer synthesized the first ever virus outside a living cell, and produced the first ever chemically synthesized infectious virus genome. Among his numerous honors, Dr. Wimmer is the recipient of two NIH Merit Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Research Foundation of the State of New York, the Beijerinck Virology Price, and the 2012 Robert Koch Medal. Dr. Wimmer earned his BS in Chemistry from the University of Rostock, Germany, a MS in Chemistry from the University of Goettingen, Germany and his Dr. rer. nat. in Organic Chemistry from the University of Goettingen, Germany.
