John F. began their career as an Accelerator Technician at Yale University in 1989 and later worked as an Engineer at Carnegie Observatories, where they designed and commissioned a multifiber spectrograph for a 2.5m telescope. John F. then pursued a role as a Graduate Student and Engineer at Columbia University, specifically in their UV Rocket Group.
In 1994, Filhaber joined AURA Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory as an Optical Engineer, where they focused on designing and developing instruments and telescope optical control systems. Afterward, they took on the position of Systems Engineering Manager at AURA Gemini Telescopes Project, where they further honed their skills in managing engineering projects.
Moving forward, Filhaber was employed by Corning Incorporated as a Program Manager from 1999 to 2002, before joining Zygo Corporation. At Zygo, they held several roles including Program Director for Advanced Projects, Director of the Instruments Business Unit, Director of Large Aperture and Software Engineering, and ultimately Director of Special Programs. During their time at Zygo, Filhaber gained extensive experience in leading and managing various engineering programs.
In 2014, Filhaber joined Cognex Corporation as a Cognoid, a role in which they were highly appreciated and empowered by the company. After that, they took on the position of Director of Optical Systems at the Giant Magellan Telescope Organization, followed by their current role as Director of Optical Engineering at Cognex Corporation, starting in September 2015.
Overall, John F. Filhaber has demonstrated a strong passion for optical engineering and a wealth of experience in managing and leading engineering projects.
John F. Filhaber attended Wesleyan University from 1983 to 1987, where they earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Physics and Astronomy.
