He lives out his drum corps aspirations by playing bass drum in the Geneseo Knights Alumni Drumline which performs annually at Percussion Palooza in Rock Falls, Illinois.

For more than a decade, Alan has directed the Maple City Band in Geneseo, Illinois, providing entertainment for their annual ice cream socials as well as other summer concerts in the area. The Maple City Band allows high school students and adults to perform a variety of tunes together including patriotic music, several marches, folk songs, and Broadway tunes. Through their performances, MCB helps local nonprofits raise funds for needed projects.

Alan earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and mathematics from Drake University before learning his true love was music education. He returned to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduated with honors while receiving a bachelor's degree in music education. He then continued his education with post-graduate courses at VanderCook College in Chicago.

Alan was a middle school band director in Geneseo, a high school band director in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and he has taught percussion ensembles in the Cedar Rapids area including Cornell College where he directed the Pandemonium and Toucan steel pan bands.
