Sarah Chen Small

Sarah Chen Small currently serves as a Legal Fellow at Communities for a Better Environment and a Postgraduate Fellow at the Legal Services Funders Network, both positions held since June 2023. Prior to these roles, Sarah was a Law Student at the University of California, Davis from August 2020 to May 2023, where significant experiences included a Law Clerk position at Earthjustice and serving as Co-Editor in Chief for the Environmental Law and Policy Journal. Previous to law school, Sarah held key positions in city government and nonprofit organizations, including Deputy Unit Lead & Data Manager for the Office of the Controller in San Francisco, and provided research support as a Research Assistant at the University of California, San Francisco. Sarah holds a JD in Public Interest from UC Davis School of Law and a Bachelor's degree in Political History and Sociology from Wesleyan University.

Founded in 1978, Communities for a Better Environment (CBE) is one of the preeminent environmental justice organizations in the nation. The mission of CBE is to build people’s power in California’s communities of color and low income communities to achieve environmental health and justice by preventing and reducing pollution and building green, healthy and sustainable communities and environments. CBE provides residents in heavily polluted urban communities in California with organizing skills, leadership training and legal, scientific and technical assistance, so that they can successfully confront threats to their health and well-being.
