Derek R. Harris has extensive experience in various leadership and managerial roles. Derek R. started their career as an Infantry Specialist in the US Army, serving in Operation Desert Storm. Derek R. then transitioned to working as a Guardian Ad Litem for the Thurston County Superior Court, conducting investigations and presenting findings in court. Following that, they joined Pioneer Human Services as an Assistant Director, overseeing a community-based facility for transitioning youth. At Community Youth Services, Derek held multiple positions, including Program Director of Haven House, Deputy Director, and eventually the Chief Executive Officer, where they provided strategic direction, managed administration and finance, and cultivated donor relationships.
Derek R. Harris began their education journey in 1992 at South Puget Sound Community College, where they completed their Associate of Arts degree in Sociology, Psychology, Music, and Speech in 1994. Derek R. then transferred to Saint Martin's University, where they pursued further studies but did not obtain a degree. Following this, Derek attended The Evergreen State College from 1996 to 1999, where they earned their Bachelor of Arts degree with a focus on Social Work, Sociology, and Family Law.

Community Youth Services
Community Youth Services (CYS) is a non-profit organization actively working in the communities in Thurston, Mason, Lewis and Pierce counties. Through an array of programs CYS offers a continuum of care to help youth, ages 12-24, find their way toward safety, stability and success. Our programs cover juvenile justice, early intervention, out-of-home care, employment and education, behavioral health and wellness, and shelter and housing.
