A Revolutionary Test: Convergent AH has developed a patent pending micro-RNA (miRNA) blood biomarker test that can detect when animals have been exposed to pathogens even before symptoms are evident. Convergent AH, in collaboration with Texas Tech Health Science Center, is working to further develop the test and procedures for a range of pathogens and species. microRNA (miRNA) are small single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules found in all living organism that function to turn genes on or off. Over 200 miRNAs have already been identified in mammals, with more than 90% shared by all mammals. miRNA can be extracted from blood or tissue. Changes in miRNA levels is a biomarker, an indication that the body has undertaken a given biological process. By measuring the levels of miRNAs in an organism it’s possible to identify the animal’s response to pathogens. DNA represents molecules inside cells that contain the genetic information responsible for the development and function of an organism, and is also referred to as our genetic code. DNA regulates the activity of the organism and also allows this information to be passed from one generation to the next. RNA acts as a messenger carrying instructions from the DNA for controlling the synthesis of proteins, the basic building blocks of the body.
