Andrew Byrd

Andrew Byrd has worked in the transportation industry since 2002. Andrew began their career as a Research Assistant at Portland State University's Intelligent Transportation Systems and High Performance Computing Labs, where they designed and implemented the first regional transportation data archive for the Oregon Department of Transportation and worked with planners to improve regional traffic models. In 2006, they became a Development Engineer at École des Ponts ParisTech. Two years later, they took on a Research Fellow role at the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks (IFSTTAR). In 2010, they joined OpenPlans as a Senior Developer, where they refined and optimized algorithms for multi-modal passenger transportation pathfinding and conceived and implemented spatial analysis and accessibility visualization tools. In 2013, Andrew co-founded Conveyal, creating software systems enabling better multi-modal passenger transportation outcomes. Andrew currently oversees the software architecture and methodology behind their distributed cloud-based urban analysis system, managing a team of engineers and transportation planners in Europe and North America.

Andrew Byrd received a Master's degree from École des Ponts ParisTech in Urban Planning (Mobility and Transport specialization) between 2005 and 2007. Prior to this, they obtained a Bachelor of Science - BS in Computer Science and a Bachelor of Arts - BA in French Language and Literature from Portland State University between 2001 and 2004.
