Derek Johnson

Derek Johnson currently serves as the County Executive Officer for the County of Marin, a role focused on providing leadership and support since April 2024. Prior to this position, Derek held various roles in the City of San Luis Obispo from November 2011 to April 2024, including City Manager and Community Development Director, with a strong emphasis on community development and land use planning. Derek's experience also includes serving as the Community Development Director for the City of Capitola and various leadership roles in the County of Santa Barbara, where responsibilities included updating land use policy and managing community plans. Additionally, Derek was the General Manager of the Isla Vista Recreation and Parks District and a Senior Consultant at Visionworks Consulting, specializing in strategic planning for nonprofit organizations. Derek holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from UC Santa Barbara, earned between 1988 and 1992.
