Evan Horton

Dr. Evan Horton is the Superintendent of the Coweta County School System. He was named by the Board in March of 2020 to succeed Dr. Steve Barker in the role, and began as Superintendent on June 1.

Dr. Horton is a 22-year educator who has served as a Coweta County teacher, coach, principal and system administrator during his career with the Coweta County School System, including as principal of East Coweta High School. Before becoming Superintendent, he served as the school system’s Assistant Superintendent for Student Services and Safety, overseeing the school system’s safety, student discipline, transportation and food service departments, among other duties.

A native of Oxford, Alabama, Horton began his teaching career in 1998 at Maxwell Elementary School in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He came to Coweta County in 1999, teaching civics and history at Newnan High School,and coaching basketball, baseball and cross-country at NHS as well. He later moved to Northgate High School, where he taught and also served as an assistant football coach, head basketball coach, and assistant athletic director. In 2006 he became an assistant principal at East Coweta High School, then ECHS athletic director in 2008, prior to serving as the East Coweta High School principal 2012 to 2015. As Assistant Superintendent, Horton oversaw the system’s School Nutrition and Transportation departments, system staff and student safety, student discipline and student code of conduct matters, school system disciplinary policies,student attendance, positive behavior interventions and support, and served as a liaison between the school system, School Resource Officers and law enforcement generally.

Dr.Horton earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education and Human Performance Studies from the University of Alabama in 1998, his Master’s degree in Public Administration from Troy State University in 2005, his Leadership certification from the State University of West Georgia in 2006, and an Education Specialist degree in Administration from Georgia College and State University in 2009. He completed his Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership at Liberty University in the summer of 2020.
