Robert Schmidt

Senior Director Of R&d - High Brightness And Video Components at Cree LED

Robert Schmidt has an extensive work experience spanning over various roles in research and development. Robert started their career as an Undergraduate Researcher at Virginia Tech, where they synthesized functionalized long chain aliphatic mercaptans and operated gas phase FT-IR analytical equipment. Robert then moved on to Jefferson Lab as a Summer Researcher before joining North Carolina State University as a Graduate Student. At NCSU, Robert investigated electron transfer processes and published peer-reviewed articles on the topic.

After completing their graduate studies, Robert became a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. During their time there, they conducted research in solar energy conversion and solar fuels. Robert focused on water oxidation, proton/carbon dioxide reduction, and singlet oxygen generation for photodynamic therapy.

Robert joined Cree LED in 2012 as a Research Scientist, and progressively advanced through various roles, including Research Scientist and R&D Engineering Manager, Research Scientist and R&D Scientist Manager, and Nitride Epi R&D Department Manager. In these positions, they specialized in MOCVD growth of LED's for residential and commercial lighting, with a focus on improving emission intensity, throughput, and cost. Robert also led teams of scientists and engineers, overseeing R&D projects and driving innovation.

Currently, Robert holds the position of Senior Director of R&D - High Brightness and Video Components at Cree LED, where they continue to contribute their expertise in LED research and development.

Robert Schmidt completed their Ph.D. in Chemistry at North Carolina State University from 2005 to 2010. Prior to that, they obtained their B.S. in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Materials Science from Virginia Tech between 2001 and 2005.
