Chris started their career at the Commonwealth Development Corporation as a Project Manager/General Manager from 1988 to 1998 and at DFID as a Technical Co-Operation Officer from 1985 to 1988, where they conducted agronomic research and co-authored the UK Government's review of its Agriculture Aid Strategy.

Chris Johnson completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Portsmouth, where they studied from 1979 to 1982. Chris then pursued a Master of Science degree in Crop Protection at the University of Reading from 1983 to 1984. Chris'searlier education was at Latymer, although specific details, such as the degree obtained or the study field, are not provided.
