Michael Fernandez is an accomplished data scientist and systems engineer with extensive experience in bioprocess control, application development, and data architecture. Currently serving at Cultivated Biosciences, Michael leads system upgrades and develops user-centered GUI applications. Prior roles include Senior Scientist and Technical Product Manager at Pregnolia AG, where responsibilities encompassed designing cloud-enabled applications for machine learning while ensuring subject confidentiality. As Director of Information Technology at AeroFarms, Michael directed an agile team in creating a full-stack operations management application, alongside serving as Senior Systems Engineer, where Michael defined data architecture and developed AI algorithms. Michael's academic background includes a PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University, as well as a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston. Notable early research includes experience at Columbia University as a Graduate Research Assistant and international research in China as an Undergraduate Research Assistant.

Dairy causes 4% of global greenhouse gas emission. Plant-based alternatives, although gaining traction, don't appeal to many consumers, as they lack a creaminess for which the fat component is key. At Cultivated we want to fix this. We are developing an emulsion from yeast, which offers the creaminess needed for plant-based dairy, while enabling clean labels.
