Michael Eng Hoe Khor began their career in 2014 as a Research Lab Assistant at the McMahon Laboratory, University of Wisconsin-Madison, where they researched activated sludge in wastewater treatment, particularly in Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR). Michael Eng Hoe also executed bash-based applications on DNA/RNA data (filtering, assembly). In 2015, they took on the role of Orientation Program Peer Advisor at the College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2017, they joined Zymergen, Inc. as a Senior Manufacturing Engineer, where they collaborated with data scientists and software engineers to develop Python packages for processing time-series fermentation experiment data. Michael Eng Hoe also created and maintained many Binderhub tools to automate routine lab data tasks, which were used by research associates and engineers. Michael Eng Hoe was also the liaison between Fermentation scientists and data/software engineering group, tracking and communicating new software, upgrades, and issues. Additionally, they onboarded a new automated high-throughput small-scale fermentation system, scaling down existing processes and defining new profile-based step automations. Michael Eng Hoe also utilized JMP and Excel macros to automate routine tasks and data analysis, reducing operator time and input error. In 2022, they became a Software Engineer at Culture Biosciences.
Michael Eng Hoe Khor is currently enrolled in a Master of Information and Data Science program at UC Berkeley School of Information, starting in 2022. Michael Eng Hoe previously obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical and Biological Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2019, they completed a Data Analyst Nanodegree from Udacity. Michael Eng Hoe has also taken courses at Delft University of Technology in Industrial Biotechnology and obtained transfer credits from INTI International University & Colleges as part of the American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP).
