Chief Scientific Officer at Cultured Decadence

Ian Johnson is the current Chief Scientific Officer at Cultured Decadence. Prior to their current position, they were the Director at UPSIDE Foods for seven months, and CSO and Co-founder of Cultured Decadence for two years. Ian has also worked with Finless Foods for two years and two months as a Scientist, Senior Research Associate, and Director of Research Operations. In this role, they were responsible for designing, developing, and executing novel protocols for the isolation and propagation of various primary fish cell cultures. Ian also developed protocols for new cell line development, and designed and executed characterization and selection experiments for desired primary cell types and behaviors. Additionally, Ian led the formulation and optimization of serum-free and suspension cell culturing media for fish cell cultures. Ian was also responsible for managing all Research Associates and Laboratory Technicians, as well as all aspects of fish cell culture development including media preparation, cell propagation, cell quality optimization, tracking of cell growth and phenotype, and cell inventory management. Furthermore, they assisted with cell engineering work ranging from gene editing to transductions to cell sorting techniques. Ian also assisted with functional and immunological characterization of cells using techniques such as immunocytochemistry, flow-cytometry and confocal microscopy. Ian has also worked with Adverum Biotechnologies, Inc. as a Research Product Associate for five months, and Cook MyoSite as a Research Product Associate for two years and one month. Additionally, Ian has experience in warehouse management from their time working as an Assistant Warehouse Manager at Petsmart for two years and one month. Ian’s research experience began as an undergraduate student researcher at the University of Pittsburgh where they worked for one year and nine months.

Ian Johnson has a University of Pittsburgh degree in Molecular Biology, a John Carroll University degree in Biochemistry, and a Central Catholic High School diploma. Ian also has a Coursera Course Certificate in The Science of Stem Cells.
