Lars Nielsen has a significant amount of experience in the energy sector. Lars worked at the Danish Energy Agency as Head of Division from 1995 to 1999, where they focused on the liberalization and regulatory reform of the Danish electricity sector. Lars also worked as an Advisor at the Danish Energy Agency from 1995 to 1999, where they specialized in combined heat and power and district heating. Lars then went on to work at the European Commission as a National Expert in the unit for renewable energy and energy efficiency from 1999 to 2002. Lars was involved in the development of EU directives on combined heat and power, renewable electricity, and the management committee of the EU SAVE program on energy efficiency. Lars also held various positions within the Danish government, including Head of Division at the Danish Ministry of Transport and Energy and the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy. Lars was responsible for national energy policy and played a role in the negotiation of EU legislation and policies. Lars has also worked for the Danish Permanent Representation to the European Union as an Energy Attaché, where they represented Danish interests in EU energy discussions and negotiations. Lars has experience in policy dialogue, strategy formulation, program management, and coordination of energy-related matters. Recently, Lars worked as a Seconded National Expert at the Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia, supporting the delegation in the energy, migration, and refugee sectors. Key areas of expertise include regulatory frameworks, energy policy, energy efficiency, capacity building, and donor coordination. Currently, Lars works as Head of Division at the Danish Energy Agency, leading policy, regulation, and analysis initiatives in areas such as security of electricity supply, transmission lines, generation adequacy, demand response, smart grids, and investment in renewable energy.
Lars Nielsen began their education in 1988 at the Copenhagen Business School where they pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Business Administration and Management, with a focus on General Management. Lars completed their studies at this institution in 1994. In 1992, Lars Nielsen also attended the University of Surrey for a year, where they pursued a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in European Studies. Lars finished their studies at the University of Surrey in 1993.
