Principal Software Engineer at Data Intellect

Matt Doherty has a diverse work experience, primarily in the fields of software engineering and data analysis. Matt started their career as a Summer placement researcher at Trinity College Dublin, where they gained experience in nanostructure growth on off-cut Silicon.

Afterwards, they joined Queen's University Belfast as a PhD Researcher, where they completed their PhD thesis focused on plasmonic nano-antenna arrays for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and other applications. Matt also worked as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the same institution, where they designed and tested nanostructured SERS surfaces for the trace detection of explosive precursors.

Later, Matt worked at AquaQ Analytics as a Software Developer and Data Analyst, specializing in kdb+ in the finance industry. Matt also ran external kdb+ training courses for quants and developers at other investment banks. Concurrently, they worked at Deutsche Bank Systematic Trading Initiative as a kdb+ developer/consultant, where they developed and expanded features in the Central Risk System and Analytics Data Mart projects.

Matt then joined Analytics Engines as an Engineer, where they worked on a startup project developing a big data platform product, utilizing technologies such as Python, Puppet, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Neo4j, Jenkins, and Hadoop. Matt built a demo piece examining the correlation between drug prescriptions and socio-economic statistics.

Afterwards, Matt worked at Millennium Management as an Engineering Team Lead, and currently, they are a Principal Software Engineer at Data Intellect. In this role, they serve as a principal engineer and senior line manager, specializing in kdb+ and the finance sector. Matt consulted with a Fintech startup for a proof of concept of their fixed income visualization product with a tier one investment bank. Matt also developed and expanded the AquaQ training program, centralizing the training resources and expanding the course materials.

Throughout their career, Matt has demonstrated expertise in various technologies and platforms, including kdb+, Python, puppet, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Neo4j, Jenkins, and Hadoop. Matt has also contributed to the AquaQ blog and has published research articles in reputable journals.

Matt Doherty began their education at Wallace High School from 1998 to 2005, where they completed their A-levels and GCSEs. Matt then went on to pursue a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at Queen's University Belfast from 2005 to 2009, earning a First Class Honours distinction. Building on this, Matt continued their academic journey at Queen's University Belfast, obtaining a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Physics from 2009 to 2012.
