Richard began their career as a Senior Software Engineer at Ferranti International Controls in 1986 and stayed with the company until 1997. Following this, they joined WorldCom as a Software Manager, where they worked until 2002. At WorldCom, they gained valuable experience in managing software projects.

In this role, they led a team of 85 employees and effectively managed the program's scope and finances.
