Shan Suganthan

Senior Machine Learning Engineer & Tech Lead at De Beers Group

Shan Suganthan has a rich and diverse work experience. Shan started their professional journey in 2001 as an Instructor in Computer Science at the University of Jaffna. Shan later became an Assistant Lecturer in Computer Science, teaching various courses on programming, logic, expert systems, computer graphics, and image processing. In 2006, Shan joined the University of Ulster as a Research Associate, focusing on Image Processing and Computer Vision for a range image processing project. In 2008, they moved to Smart Sensors Ltd as a Research Engineer, where they made significant contributions to iris recognition technology, including the development of segmentation algorithms and improvements to template coding and matching algorithms. In 2014, Shan joined Xperi Corporation as a Senior Research Engineer before becoming an Iris Biometric Research Consultant. Shan provided expertise in iris biometrics and conducted research on iris recognition technology. Currently, Shan is working at De Beers Group as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer & Tech Lead, leading machine learning projects and leveraging their expertise in image processing and engineering.

Shan Suganthan has a diverse education history. Shan obtained their Ph.D. in Image Processing and Computer Vision from the University of Derby between 2002 and 2006. Prior to that, they completed their B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Jaffna from 1995 to 2001. In their earlier years, Shan attended Union College, Tellippalai from 1984 to 1991 and Inuvil A.M.T.K. School from 1978 to 1983. Additionally, they have acquired several certifications, including Advanced Design Thinking from Design Thinkers Academy USA in 2022, Agile Change Agent from APMG International in 2021, Introduction to the 4Cs from the International Institute of Diamond Grading and Research in 2019, and Diamond Foundation from the same institution in 2018.
