Ian Delport has a diverse work experience spanning several industries. Ian began their career in 1983 as a Corporal in the South African Department of Defence. From 1985 to 1987, they worked as an Industrial Inspector at the Department of Labour, where they inspected businesses for compliance with labor legislation and handled unemployment insurance claims.

In 1987, Delport joined President Steyn Mine as a Personnel Officer, a role they held until 1996. Ian then moved on to Dorbyl (First-Pro Engineering) as a Human Resources Manager from November 1996 to June 1997. Delport later joined Grey Security Services Border Region as a Personnel Manager from July 1997 to June 2002.

Their next career move was to Defy Appliances, where they held various executive positions. From an unspecified date to October 2019, they served as the Head of Industrial Relations. From October 2019 to February 2021, they held the position of Head of Corporate and Legal Affairs. From July 2003 to March 2021, Delport was the Head of Industrial Relations responsible for all of Defy's national operations. Prior to January 2012, they also managed the entire HR function and payroll at the East London manufacturing operations. Additionally, Delport was a member of the National Negotiations team in the Metal and Engineering Sector of South Africa.

Ian Delport's education history starts with their completion of Stellenbosch University's Executive Development Program in 2013, where they achieved two distinctions. Ian's educational journey began in 1989, when they attended Technikon OFS and earned a National Diploma in Personnel Management, which they completed in 1992. Lastly, they completed their Standard 10/Grade 12 education at Stutterheim High School, from 1971 to 1982. No field of study is specified for their high school education.
