Following their Gymnasium degree, Wim van Balen attended Delft University of Technology, where they pursued a BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering from 1999 to 2005. Wim then continued their education at the same university and earned a PhD in Fluid Dynamics from 2005 to 2009.

In addition to their degrees, Wim van Balen has also obtained various certifications. Wim completed The Science and Modeling of Climate Change program at the University of Chicago in November 2020. In January 2020, they obtained a certification in Finance for Non-Finance Professionals from Rice University. Prior to that, in November 2019, they completed the Deep Learning Specialization offered by deeplearning.ai. In August 2019, they obtained a certification in Web Design Specialization from the University of Michigan. Furthermore, in April 2018, they completed the Machine Learning program at Stanford University.
