Nii O. Quarcoopome

Co-Chief Curator at Detroit Institute of Arts

Nii O. Quarcoopome has extensive experience working in the art industry. Nii O. started their career at the University of Michigan in 1991 as an Assistant Professor of Art History, where they stayed until 1998. Nii O. then moved on to The Newark Museum, where they served as the Curator of Arts of Africa, Pacific, and Americas from May 2000 to July 2002. In August 2002, Quarcoopome joined the Detroit Institute of Arts as the Curator of African Art and also became the Dept. Head of Africa, Oceania, and Indigenous Americas. Nii O. worked in these roles until August 2013 when they became the Co-Chief Curator at the same institution. In February 2012, Quarcoopome took on the role of Curator of African Art at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and held the position until March 2016.

Nii O. Quarcoopome completed their Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology from the University of Ghana, Legon, from 1974 to 1977. Nii O. pursued further education at UCLA from 1979 to 1993, earning multiple degrees including MA, MA, and a Ph.D. in the field of Art History.
