Alan O'Brien

Deputy Director - Climate Unit (Department of Foreign Affairs)

Alan O'Brien is currently the Deputy Director of the Climate Unit in the Department of Foreign Affairs, a position held since 2024. Previously, O'Brien served as a press spokesperson for the Permanent Representation of Ireland to the EU from 2021 to 2024 and was a Higher Executive Officer in the Department of Agriculture and Food from 2009 to 2014, managing the Animal Welfare and Live Transport Unit. O'Brien's prior roles in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade include serving as a Third Secretary focused on Latin America and the Caribbean and Deputy Director of British-Irish Relations. O'Brien holds a Master of Arts in History from University College Dublin and a Master’s Degree in Economics and Policy Analysis from the Institute of Public Administration.
