Born on December 24, 1965, the player career of the Ulm player began at TSG Söflingen. In 1977 he switched to SSV Ulm, with whom he made it to the 2nd Bundesliga and played 34 games. After moving to the amateurs of VfB Stuttgart in 1987, where he also began studying engineering, Sorg played for TSF Ditzingen (1993 to 1996, 1997 to 1999) and VfR Mannheim (1996 to 1997) in the regional league for several years.

Marcus Sorg started his coaching career at the age of 33. First with the Stuttgarter Kickers, later with the TSF Ditzingen, the Heidenheimer SB and the SSV Ulm. In the meantime, Sorg is doing his A-coaching license, interning at Diego Maradona's home club Argentinos Juniors in Buenos Aires and coming to SC Freiburg in 2008. This qualifies him for the next step: On July 1, 2011, the qualified engineer for basic and building physics will be the head coach of the first team in the Bundesliga.

In the summer of 2012 he switched to Bayern Munich's U17s before taking over the German U19 national team one season later. With this, Marcus Sorg becomes European Champion on July 31, 2014 in Budapest. Since then, Marcus Sorg has been working in Joachim Löw's coaching team together with Thomas Schneider as the national coach's assistant.
