Dr. Eckstein studied medicine at the Friedrich-Alexander University’s Medical School in Erlangen, graduated in 2015 and received his doctoral degree in 2016. Since 2016 he is resident in surgical pathology at the Institute of Pathology of FAU Medical School (Director: Prof. Arndt Hartmann) where he trains in general pathology with focus on uropathology. He is member of the Germany Society of Pathology and the International Academy of Pathology (German Section). His main research focus lies on characterization of immune phenotypes, immune evasion mechanisms and the crucial role of immune checkpoint proteins in muscle-invasive bladder cancer. A further focus is the diagnostic assessment of PD-L1 in several cancer types, especially bladder cancer and renal cell cancer. Since the start of his residency he authored and co-authored more than 26 peer peer-reviewed original articles.
