Fujio Watanabe

Fujio Watanabe has extensive work experience in the telecommunications industry. Fujio started their career as a Research Trainee at the Communications Research Laboratory in Japan from 1993 to 1998. After that, they joined Nokia Research Center in Helsinki as a Research Engineer, where they contributed to the development of MAC technologies in WLAN standard specification from 1998 to 2001.

In 2001, Watanabe joined DOCOMO USA Labs, where they held various roles, including Senior Research Engineer, Project Manager, and Director of the Network Innovation Group. Fujio worked at DOCOMO USA Labs until 2011, when they moved to DOCOMO Innovations, Inc.

At DOCOMO Innovations, Inc., Watanabe initially served as the Director of the Mobile Network Technology Group from 2011 to 2018. Fujio then became the Director of the Data Analytics Innovation Group from 2018 to 2019, followed by the Director of the AI & Data Analytics Innovation Group from 2019 to 2020. Currently, they hold the position of Senior Director, leading activities such as network optimization, standardization, research partnerships, cloud optimization, and ML/DL technologies. Fujio is also the DOCOMO delegate for Next G Alliance (NGA) toward 6G.

Fujio Watanabe's education history begins in 1989 when they enrolled at The University of Electro-Communications. Fujio pursued a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree with a focus on Communications (Industrial Engineering), which they successfully completed in 1993.

After obtaining their bachelor's degree, Fujio Watanabe continued their studies at The University of Electro-Communications. From 1993 to 1995, they pursued a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) degree with a specialization in Information System (Mobile Communications).

In 1994, Fujio Watanabe briefly studied at the University of Adelaide, specializing in Electrical Electronics Engineering; however, no specific degree was mentioned for this period.

Fujio Watanabe returned to The University of Electro-Communications in 1995 and completed a Doctor of Engineering (Dr. Eng.) degree in Information System (Mobile Communications) in 1998. This marked the culmination of their formal education.
